Worried about GST rates? Know what gets cheaper and costlier

NEW DELHI: The GST - a unified tax structure across a wide range of goods and services that replaced various taxes levied by the Centre and state governments has rolled-out from Friday midnight.  A large number of daily use household products will become cheaper under the new tax reform. In a majority of supplies of goods, the tax incidence approved by the GST Council is much lower than the present combined indirect tax rates levied by the Centre and states, the finance ministry had said. In a bonanza time for consumers companies, ranging from apparels to car manufacturers, wooing them with attractive discounts ahead of implementation of the GST next month. The nearing of GST has caused a discomfort amongst the traders as they are worried over the cash flow that might occur during GST implementation therefore, offers are being introduced. The following is a list of items that will turn costlier after GST implementation:

  • Mobile bill
  • Car
  • Insurance
  • Meal in restaurant
  • Gold
  • Shampoo
  • Perfume
  • Makeup kits
  • Tour packages
Following is a list items that will turn cheaper:
  • Clothing
  • Shoes, Slippers
  • Sugar
  • Tea
  • Coffee
  • Milk
  • Curd
  • Ice cream
  • Meat
  • Vegetables
  • Air travel
  • Sleeper ticket in train
  • Smartphones
  • Leather bag
  • Groundnut oil, palm oil, sunflower oil, coconut oil, mustard oil, sugar, palmyra jaggery, sugar confectionery, pasta, spaghetti, macaroni, noodles, fruit and vegetable items, several food products, pickle, murabba, chutney, sweetmeats, ketchup and sauces.
  • Toppings, spreads and sauces, instant food mixes, mineral water, ice, cement, coal, kerosene PDS, LPG domestic, insulin, agarbatti, tooth powder, hair oil, toothpaste, kajal, soap, X-ray films for medical useand diagnostic kits and reagents.
  • Plastic tarpaulin, school bag, exercise books and note books, kites, children's picture, drawing or colouring books, silk and woollen fabrics, certain types of cotton fabrics and specific readymade garments, along with footwear of Rs 500, and helmet.
  • Fly ash bricks and fly ash blocks, glasses for corrective spectacles, LPG stove, spoons, forks, ladles, skimmers, cake servers, fish knives, tongs, fixed speed diesel engines of power not exceeding 15HP, tractor rear tyres and tractor rear tyre tubes, and weighing machinery.
  • Milk powder, curd, butter milk, Unbranded Natural Honey, dairy spreads, cheese, spices, tea, wheat, rice, flour, and spices, Note books, domestic LPG, aluminium foils, insulin, agarbatti.
