West Bengal: Suvendu Adhikari Approaches Calcutta HC, Seeks Mukul Roy's Disqualification As MLA

Suvendu Adhikari said the Anti-Defection Law has not been implemented under the Trinamool Congress-led Government's rule in the last ten years.

New Delhi: West Bengal's leader of opposition Suvendu Adhikari on Monday approached the Calcutta High Court seeking action against TMC leader Mukul Roy. He seeks for the court to disqualify Mukul Roy, who recently joined the TMC, as an MLA under the Anti-Defection Law.

Suvendu Adhikari said the Anti-Defection Law has not been implemented under the Trinamool Congress-led Government's rule in the last ten years, even as more than 50 MLAs have changed parties in this period.

Earlier, the leader of opposition in the West Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari had met Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar to oppose appointment of MLA Mukul Roy as the Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) and requested for his intervention citing violation of rules in the appointment of Mukul Roy.

Suvendu Adhikari had said that Mukul Roy, who was elected as MLA on a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ticket, defected to the TMC and that making him PAC president is a violation of the rules, as the leader of the opposition party is the only one who could be appointed to the post.

'Trinamool Congress workers involved in state-sponsored violence' - BJP

The BJP on Monday hit out at the Trinamool Congress over its alleged heckling of senior leader Dilip Ghosh and claimed that Trinamool workers were involved in "state-sponsored" violence.

BJP chief spokesperson Anil Baluni said the Trinamool Congress's conduct has "put democracy to shame" after the party's third consecutive victory in the recent assembly elections. Referring to the alleged misbehavior with Ghosh by Trinamool workers, he said, "It was seen on television, and was very disturbing. What happened has tarnished the image of democracy".

Rajya Sabha member Baluni said, "Trinamool is not giving equal opportunity to its rivals. Our leaders are not even allowed to campaign as Trinamool Congress sponsored goons are indulging in state-sponsored violence." He said that "If a person like Ghosh, who gets high-grade security, can get attacked here, the situation of the common man is unthinkable."
