Congress To Move Supreme Court 'Very Soon' Challenging Waqf Amendment Bill

Congress said it has planned to challenge the recently passed Waqf (Amendment) Bill in the Supreme Court.

The Congress party has said it will challenge the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025 in Supreme Court "very soon" after the legislation was passed by the Parliament in the early hours of Friday.

In a post on X, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said, "The INC will very soon be challenging in the Supreme Court the constitutionality of the Wakf (Amendment) Bill, 2024".

"We are confident and will continue to resist all assaults of the Modi Govt on the principles, provisions, and practices that are contained in the Constitution of India," he said.

The Congress MP in Rajya Sabha also mentioned the party's challenge of the Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019 and 2019 amendments to the RTI Act, 2005 being heard in the apex court.

He also said the INC's challenge to the validity of the amendments to the Conduct of Election Rules (2024) is also in the top court.

"The INC's intervention to uphold the letter and spirit of the Places of Worship Act, 1991 is being heard in the Supreme Court," he added.

'Will You Take Away Our Rights?'

Congress MP Imran Masood slammed the NDA-led Centre over the Bill saying the party will move the Supreme Court.

"Will you take away our right to religious freedom just because you have a majority? Having a majority doesn't mean that you can crush the rights of minorities," he said.

"Because you don't have the right to change the Constitution, you are partially damaging it...To preserve the Right to Equality is the responsibility of the government...," the Congress leader said.

Another party MP Pramod Tiwari said the passage of the Bill by Parliament has "violated Articles 25, 26, 15, 16 and it has snatched the basic values of the Indian Constitution."
