TMC's Derek O'Brien Suspended From Rajya Sabha Over 'Ignoble Misconduct'

TMC MP Derek O'Brien has been suspended from Rajya Sabha over 'ignoble misconduct' for remaining part of the Winter Session.

TMC MP Derek O'Brien has been suspended from Rajya Sabha For the remaining Winter Session on charges of obstructing the proceedings of the House. This after he was asked to leave the House immediately by Chairperson Jagdeep Dhankhar for disorderly conduct. The Rajya Sabha Chairman said Derek O'Brien had entered the well of the House, shouted slogans and disrupted the proceedings of the House as the opposition raised the issue of yesterday's security breach incident.

When the House assembled at noon after an initial adjournment, Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar named and warned O'Brien for his conduct. He was named earlier in the day as well for "unruly behaviour" and was asked by the chairman to leave the House.

Dhankhar accused O'Brien of violating the directions of the chair and of disrupting the proceedings of the House. He then allowed Leader of the House Piyush Goyal to move a motion in this regard. The motion was adopted with a voice vote and the chairman announced that O'Brien stands suspended from the House for the remainder of the winter session, the agency stated.

Dhankhar and O'Brien have earlier also engaged in a war of words leading to strong reactions from the former who also warned the TMC MP of suspension.

During the monsoon session this year, Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar announced the suspension of TMC MP Derek O'Brien from the House for the remaining duration of the session for his unruly conduct in the upper house. A spat broke out between the two after O'Brien raised 'Point of Order'.

The Chairman said that a member must raise a point of order if he has asked for it and should not use the time for a speech. However, the TMC MP said that leaders of the opposition in the House have been asking for a discussion on Manipur.

However, he was later allowed to attend the House after no voting took place on the motion to suspend him following his argument with Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar.
