Rajasthan: Three Students, Preparing For Competitive Exams In Kota, Die By Suicide

Three students in Kota purportedly died by suicide. Two of the students, who were from Bihar, were found hanging and the third, from Madhya Pradesh, was found to have consumed poison.

Three students of private coaching institutes, who were preparing for competitive exams in Rajasthan’s Kota, have purportedly died by suicide. With the three teenagers' deaths, the spotlight is back on the country’s largest coaching hub where institutes are known to allegedly push students to the edge while preparing them for competitive exams.

Quoting Kota SP Keshar Singh Shekhawat, Hindustan Times reported that two of the students — aged 18 and 19 — were from Bihar. The officer said that they were found hanging from the ceiling fans of their respective rooms at the paying guest (PG) accommodation where they lived.

“The two were Class 11 students and were staying in different rooms of the same PG accommodation for the past six months. We are trying to find out whether they were friends or not,” Shekhawat said. The police said the owner of the PG accommodation got suspicious after one of the boys failed to open the door in the morning to his room despite repeated knocks. He then broke open the door and found the boy hanging.

Later in the afternoon, the sister of the other boy, who lived in the adjacent room, came to meet him. However, when he, too, failed to open his door, it was broken open and he was found to have died in a similar manner.

No suicide note was found on either of the boys. The police are now checking their mobiles for more information. “The two had been living in Kota for the past three years. They probably hanged themselves last night after having dinner. The second boy had even called his sister last night,” an officer said.

The third student to have died by suicide was a 17-year-old boy from Madhya Pradesh's Shivpuri. He was preparing for the medical entrance examination — National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET). He was found lying dead in a corridor of the hostel where he lived. Rat poison was found on him.
