SM Krishna Passes Away: Karnataka Declares 3 Days Of Mourning, Final Rites On Dec 11

Somanahalli Mallaiah Krishna, fondly known as SM Krishna, is credited for transforming Bengaluru into the Silicon Valley of India.

SM Krishna Death: Karnataka government declared 3 days of mourning for the demise of former CM of the state SM Krishna on Tuesday. The government announced that the last rites of SM Krishna would be performed with full state honours. The final rites are scheduled to be held at his native Maddur at 4 PM on Wednesday. 

Somanahalli Mallaiah Krishna, fondly known as SM Krishna, is credited for transforming Bengaluru into the Silicon Valley of India. On Tuesday, he passed away after a prolonged illness at his residence in Bengaluru. He was 92 years old. 

In 1962, SM Krishna started his political career as an independent MLA from Maddur.

SM Krishna served as the CM of Karnataka for the period from October 1999 to May 2004. Later, he also served as the Governor of Maharashtra from 2004 to 2008 and External Affairs Minister during 2009 to 2012 in the then PM Manmohan Singh cabinet. 

Karnataka Announces Mourning 

In the next three days, the state announced that no other function or celebration would be held in these three days. 

Karnataka Dy CM DK Shivakumar, said "Till tomorrow at 8 am, everyone is allowed to pay the last respects at his residence in Bengaluru. At 8 am tomorrow, his mortal remains will be taken to Maddur, his native place. Till 10.30 we will reach Maddur. Till 3 pm, everyone would be allowed to have darshan. The family rituals would be conducted for one hour. At 4 pm, the state honour will be conducted and the last rites will be done..."
