Singapore: PM Modi attends ASEAN India Informal Summit with other leaders; to discuss terrorism today

Other than terrorism, the subject of the freedom of navigation of the South China Sea is likely to be prominent on Thursday, in the East Asia Summit, with the US and allies like Australia keen to challenge China's expansion in the area.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi who is on a two-day visit to Singapore is scheduled to take part in ASEAN-India Informal Breakfast Summit and East Asia Summit in the country. He is also likely to discuss the issue of terrorism at the podium.Prime Minister Modi and other leaders gathered to attend at the ASEAN-India Informal Breakfast Summit on Thursday morning which is to be followed by the East Asia Summit. Other than terrorism, the subject of the freedom of navigation of the South China Sea is likely to be prominent on Thursday, in the East Asia Summit, with the US and allies like Australia keen to challenge China's expansion in the area. Modi arrived here for a two-day visit on Wednesday with ASEAN-India Informal Breakfast Summit, the East Asia Summit, the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership summit a meeting with US Vice President Mike Pence, on his schedule. Before leaving for Singapore, Modi had said in New Delhi that his participation in the ASEAN-India and East Asia summits symbolised India's "continued commitment" to strengthen its engagement with ASEAN members and with the wider Indo-Pacific region. Modi also said he was confident that his visit to Singapore would impart fresh momentum to New Delhi's growing partnership with ASEAN and East Asia Summit nations. On Wednesday, Modi delivered the keynote address at the Singapore Fintech Festival where he shared with the audience India’s financial inclusion story that has transformed governance and delivery of public services. The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is a regional intergovernmental organisation comprising 10 Southeast Asian countries, which promotes intergovernmental cooperation and facilitates economic, political, security, military, educational, and socio-cultural integration among its members and other Asian states. The ASEAN members are Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, The Philippines, Vietnam, Myanmar, Cambodia, Brunei and Laos.
