‘September Development’ Brewing? Minister’s Cryptic Remark Fuels Karnataka Leadership Talk — Details

Karnataka's political scene is stirred by Minister Rajanna's hint of changes post-September, fueling speculation about leadership shifts and cabinet reshuffles within the Congress government.

Karnataka’s political landscape is abuzz with speculation following a cryptic remark by Cooperation Minister K.N. Rajanna, who hinted at significant political changes after September. His comments have triggered discussions about possible cabinet reshuffles, leadership shifts, and deepening cracks within the ruling Congress.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Rajanna remarked, “Let September get over... there will be developments in state politics. It will begin (after September),” suggesting that notable changes are in store. He also commented on the internal dynamics of the party, stating that there are “too many power centres” in the Congress government, in what many see as an indirect swipe at Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s leadership.

Adding weight to Rajanna's remarks, Home Minister G Parameshwara acknowledged that the minister might be privy to certain developments. "I don't know what information Rajanna has. He said there will be a revolution in September. He must have some information; otherwise, he wouldn't be talking like that while in a responsible position. Ask him about the September revolution, I have no information about it," Parameshwara told ANI. However, he denied having any knowledge of the purported “September revolution.”

Leadership Talks Gain Momentum?

The remarks have fuelled renewed talk of a power-sharing deal reportedly brokered after the 2023 Assembly elections between Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, in which both leaders were to share the CM post for 2.5 years each. While the Congress has never formally confirmed this arrangement, Rajanna's statement is seen as a possible reference to that agreement.

There are also murmurs about the potential change of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) President, a position Shivakumar continues to hold beyond the usual tenure.

Party Embarrassments Add Pressure

These developments come amid a string of recent embarrassments for the government. Several Congress MLAs have openly criticised their own administration, particularly over alleged irregularities in a housing scheme. The situation was further complicated by the recent stampede incident in the state.

DK Shivakumar Denies Leadership Rift

Amid growing speculation, Deputy CM DK Shivakumar dismissed the narrative that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has lost grip over the government. He squarely blamed the media for exaggerating internal issues. “The CM has not lost control over the administration. Nothing like that. You media are blowing up things,” he said.
