Presidential Polls: Farooq Abdullah 'Gratefully' Turns Down Proposal To Be Opposition Candidate

Farooq Abdullah said that Jammu and Kashmir is “passing through a critical juncture” adding that his “efforts are required to help navigate these uncertain times”.

New Delhi: Member of Parliament in Lok Sabha and president of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference, Farooq Abdullah on Saturday said that he has withdrawn his name as possible joint Opposition candidate for the post of President of India, reported news agency ANI. ‘

The reason cited by Abdullah behind withdrawing his name was that Jammu and Kashmir is “passing through a critical juncture” adding that his “efforts are required to help navigate these uncertain times”.

“I withdraw my name from consideration as a possible joint opposition candidate for the President of India. I believe that Jammu & Kashmir is passing through a critical juncture and my efforts are required to help navigate these uncertain times,” the National Conference president said, quoted by the news agency.

“I've a lot more active politics ahead of me and look forward to making a positive contribution in the service of Jammu and Kashmir and the country. I’m grateful to Mamata didi for proposing my name. I’m also grateful to all the senior leaders who offered me their support,” Abdullah added further.

Earlier this week Trinamool Congress chief and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had convened a meeting of the Opposition parties to decide a joint Opposition candidate for the post of President of India.

The Presidential election is scheduled to be held on July 18 through secret ballot whereas the votes will be counted on July 21.
