PM To Inaugurate Andaman & Nicobar 'Submarine Cable Project' Today; What Is It & How It Will Revolutionize Internet Connectivity

Submarine optical fibre cable: It will deliver faster and more reliable mobile and landline telecom services at par with other parts of the country.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi Will today inaugurate the Chennai-Andaman and Nicobar Island Submarine Cable System, a move that will revolutionise internet connectivity for the residents. Also Read | Tamil Nadu: DMK MP Kanimozhi Alleges CISF At Airport Asked Her If She Was Indian For Not Speaking Hindi; Probe Underway The move will provide high speed bandwidth of 2X200 gigabytes per second between Chennai and Port Blair, the capital of Andaman and Nicobar and then 2X100 gigabytes per second between Port Blair and 7 different islands of Andaman and Nicobar. Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of the high speed internet project 20 months ago. The project stands completed and its inauguration is scheduled on Monday. "The Prime Minister of India, Mr Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the project... on the 10th of this month," BSNL Chief General Manager, Andaman and Nicobar Telecom, Murali Krishna, wrote to senior officials of the Union territory. What is a submarine cable? A submarine communications cable is a cable laid on the seabed between land-based stations to transmit telecommunication signals across stretches of ocean and sea. It is expected to deliver faster and more reliable mobile and landline telecom services at par with other parts of the country. The move will provide high speed bandwidth of 2X200 gigabytes per second between Chennai and Port Blair, the capital of Andaman and Nicobar and then 2X100 gigabytes per second between Port Blair and 7 different islands of Andaman and Nicobar. Areas to benefit: The project envisages better connectivity from Chennai to Port Blair and seven other Islands - Swaraj Deep (Havelock), Long Island, Rangat, Hutbay (Little Andaman), Kamorta, Car Nicobar and Campbell Bay (Great Nicobar). It is to be noted that the importance of Andaman-Nicobar in terms of strategic security has increased over the last few years. Andaman-Nicobar has become an important hub to check Chinese activities at sea. How will it boost economic activities: The cable connectivity is expected to transform life in the remote Island including defence, business and tourism sectors. It is said that the enhanced telecom and broadband connectivity will boost tourism and employment generation in the islands, give an impetus to the economy and raise standards of living . It will facilitate delivery of e-Governance services such as telemedicine and tele-education as well. Also Watch:
