PM Modi Congratulates 'Friend' Trump On Oath-Taking, Expresses Hope To ‘Shape Better Future For The World’

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated 'good friend' Donald Trump on his 'historic' inauguration as the 47th President of the United States.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday congratulated Donald Trump on his inauguration as the 47th President of the United States, marking the Republican leader’s return to power for a second term.

"Congratulations my dear friend President @realDonaldTrump on your historic inauguration as the 47th President of the United States! I look forward to working closely together once again, to benefit both our countries, and to shape a better future for the world. Best wishes for a successful term ahead!" Modi posted on X.

Earlier, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, who attended the swearing-in ceremony in Washington DC as Modi’s special envoy, wrote, "Privileged to represent India as External Affairs Minister and Special Envoy of PM at the Swearing-In Ceremony of the 47th President of the United States of America today in Washington DC," Jaishankar wrote on X. He also attended the Inauguration Day Prayer Service at St John’s Church earlier in the morning.

Trump In First Speech As 47th US President: 'Golden Age Of America Begins Right Now'

Trump, 78, took the presidential oath indoors under the Capitol rotunda instead of the initially planned outdoor venue due to frigid temperatures in Washington DC. The ceremony was attended by his wife Melania, daughter Ivanka, son-in-law Jared Kushner, and business tycoons Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, and Tim Cook. His running mate, JD Vance, was sworn in as Vice President before Trump.

In his inaugural address, Trump declared, "The golden age of America begins right now. From this day forward, our country will flourish and be respected again all over the world. We will be the envy of every nation, and we will not allow ourselves to be taken advantage of any longer."

He vowed to put "America First" and pledged to end what he called the "vicious, violent and unfair weaponisation of the justice department and government."

Trump’s return to the White House marks a remarkable political comeback, four years after he left Washington amid controversy following his unsuccessful attempt to overturn the 2020 election results. His victory over Democratic rival Kamala Harris in the November 5 election was widely regarded as one of the most significant comebacks in US political history.

Despite surviving two assassination attempts, two presidential impeachments, and a criminal conviction, Trump secured a decisive win. His presidency is expected to bring sweeping changes in policies on immigration, tariffs, and energy.

On his first day in office, Trump is expected to sign a series of executive orders, including initiating the process to end birthright citizenship.
