PM Modi To Attend G7 Summit In Canada After Invitation From Mark Carney

PM Modi will be attending G7 Summit in Kananaskis later this month, following invitation from Canadian counterpart Mark Carney.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday confirmed that he will be attending the G7 Summit later this month in Canada. He said he received a call from Canadian counterpart Mark Carney during which he thanked him for extending the invitation for the summit. He also congratulated Carney on his recent election win.

In a post on X, PM Modi said: "Glad to receive a call from Prime Minister @MarkJCarney of Canada. Congratulated him on his recent election victory and thanked him for the invitation to the G7 Summit in Kananaskis later this month."

"As vibrant democracies bound by deep people-to-people ties, India and Canada will work together with renewed vigour, guided by mutual respect and shared interests. Look forward to our meeting at the Summit," he added.

India's ties with Canada soured under the government of Carney's predecessor Justin Trudeau over several issues, including the activities of Khalistani separatists in the country. Trudeau had also accused the Indian government of its involvement in the murder of separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar. However, India had denied the claims. As ties turned frosty over the issue, both the nations even expelled each other's diplomats.

Canada is hosting the G7 summit from June 15-17, where leaders are expected to discuss major global challenges, including the Russia-Ukraine conflict and the ongoing situation in West Asia.

The G7 is an informal group of the world's most industrialised countries France, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, Japan, the United States, and Canada. The European Union also participates in its discussions, alongside global institutions such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the World Bank, and the United Nations.
