PM Modi Meets Myanmar's Junta Chief Aung Hlaing On BIMSTEC Sidelines, Mourns Loss Of Lives In Earthquake

PM Modi met head of Myanmar's military government on the sidelines of BIMSTEC and expressed his condolences over the loss of lives and damage caused due to the massive earthquake in the country.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday met Myanmar's Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, the head of Myanmar's military government, on the sidelines of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral and Technical Cooperation (BIMSTEC) Summit in Bangkok. The meeting came as Myanmar grapples with the aftermath of the massive earthquake that claimed thousands of lives last week and caused widespread devastation.

Following his meeting with Hlaing, PM Modi took to X to express his condolences over the loss of lives and damage caused due to the deadly earthquake in the country.

"Once again expressed condolences on the loss of lives and damage of property in the wake of the recent earthquake. India is doing whatever is possible to assist our sisters and brothers of Myanmar in this critical time," he wrote on X.

PM Modi further shared that the two of the them discussed the bilateral relations between India and Myanmar regarding various sectors including "connectivity, capacity building, and infrastructure development".

India's Operation Brahma For Myanmar

India launched 'Operation Brahma' to help relief efforts in the earthquake-hit Myanmar, where over 3,000 people have died in the strong 7.7 magnitude earthquake on March 28. Nearly 5,000 were injured, and more than 370 remain missing nationwide, news agency PTI reported.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) is actively leading the efforts as part of the operation as the rescue and relief operations are underway in Myanmar. On Tuesday, India despatched more than 400 tonnes of relief material, while an 80-member NDRF team combed through rubble at over a dozen sites in Mandalay to rescue survivors.

Senior General Min Hlaing was brought to power after a military coup in February 2021. He also attended an official dinner for leaders of the BIMSTEC nations that also includes Thailand, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal and Sri Lanka, PTI reported.

The Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs said BIMSTEC members discussed disaster management during ministerial meetings on Thursday.
