'Watershed Moment': PM Modi Says Waqf Amendment Will 'Particularly Help Those Who...'

PM Modi's reaction came after the Rajya Sabha on Friday cleared the Waqf Bill with 128 votes in favour against 95 members who voted against the legislation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday welcomed the passage of the Waqf Amendment Bill by the Parliament, calling it a "watershed moment" in the quest for socio-economic justice, inclusive growth, and transparency. He said the Bill would help those who have remained on the margins and are being denied both voice and opportunity.

"The passage of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill and the Mussalman Wakf (Repeal) Bill by both Houses of Parliament marks a watershed moment in our collective quest for socio-economic justice, transparency, and inclusive growth. This will particularly help those who have long remained on the margins, thus being denied both voice and opportunity," he stated in a post on X.

PM Modi's reaction came after the Rajya Sabha on Friday cleared the Waqf Bill with 128 members voting in favour of it while 95 members voted against the legislation. The Rajya Sabha held discussion on the Bill for around 12 hours.

He further expressed gratitude to the Members of the Parliament who participated in the discussions in the Parliament and the Committee and voiced their perspectives to strengthen the legislations.

"A special thanks also to the countless people who sent their valuable inputs to the Parliamentary committee. Yet again, the importance of extensive debate and dialogue has been reaffirmed," he added.

Highlighting the benefits of the amendments made to the Waqf Bill, PM Modi said these legislations passed by Parliament will boost transparency and also safeguard people’s rights.

"For decades, the Waqf system was synonymous with lack of transparency and accountability. This especially harmed the interests of Muslim women, poor Muslims, Pasmanda Muslims," PM Modi said.

The Prime Minister also reiterated government's commitment to prioritising the dignity of every citizen and building a "stronger, more inclusive and more compassionate India". "We will now enter an era where the framework will be more modern and sensitive to social justice," he said.

Parliament Approves Waqf Amendment Bill

The Parliament early Friday approved the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, after the Rajya Sabha cleared the contentious legislation after another debate which lasted for over 13 hours.

The opposition parties termed the Bill "anti-Muslim" and "unconstitutional" and the government stressed that the historic reform would benefit the minority community.

The Bill was passed in the Rajya Sabha with 128 members voting in favour and 95 opposing it. A day before, it was passed in the Lok Sabha early Thursday, with 288 members supporting it and 232 against it.

Parliament also approved the Mussalman Wakf (Repeal) Bill, 2025, with the Rajya Sabha giving its nod. The Lok Sabha has already given its assent to the Bill.
