Bihar Hooch Incident

50 people died after drinking spurious alcohol in Bihar's Saran district on Tuesday. A special investigation team has been set up to crack the hooch case. During a press conference in Chhapra, the district headquarters, Saran DM Rajesh Meena on Thursday said that action has been taken against officials concerned.

"We have also conducted intensive raids across the district in the last 48 hours and nabbed 126 hooch traders. More than 4,000 litres of illicit liquor have also been seized," he said.

"Some blame lies on officials concerned too and hence SHO of Mashrak police station and the local chowkidar have been suspended with immediate effect", he added. They also said that transfer of the Sub Divisional Police Officer of Marhaura has been recommended to authorities along with a request that departmental proceedings be initiated against him.

Earlier reacting to the incident, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Thursday said that the hooch tragedy in the state's Chapra region is an example of how liquor is injurious to health, "If someone consumes liquor, they will die — an example is before us".

"Even when there was no liquor ban here, people died due to spurious liquor - even in other states. People should be alert. As there is a liquor ban here, something spurious will be sold due to which people die. Liquor is bad and shouldn't be consumed," news agency ANI quoted him as saying.

"Last time, when people died due to spurious liquor, someone said they should be compensated. If someone consumes liquor, they will die — we have an example is before us. The deaths should be condoled, those places should be visited and people should be made to understand," he added.
