NCP's Jayant Patil Suspended From Maharashtra Assembly For Remark Against Speaker

NCP leader Jayant Patil has been suspended from Maharashtra Assembly for his remarks against Speaker Rahul Narvekar.

Senior NCP leader Jayant Patil was suspended from the Maharashtra Assembly on Thursday for the rest of the winter session for his remarks against Speaker Rahul Narvekar.

The move by the Speaker came after Jayant Patil and Narvekar became involved in a heated exchange on the floor of the House. According to media website Mint, Patil accused the Speaker of displaying "shameless behaviour" as Narvekar refused to let the Opposition raise some issues during the Winter Session.

Patil's remarked caused a huge uproar in the Assembly.

After the heated exchange, a meeting was held with Narvekar. Soon after that, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Chandrakant Patil tabled a proposal in the Maharashtra Assembly to suspend Patil which was accepted by a voice vote.

Patil has also been banned from entering the premises of both the Nagpur and Mumbai assemblies.

Jayant Patil has been a member of the House for over three decades. The session of the state legislature, which began on Monday, will continue till December 30.

Opposition members on Thursday staged a walkout from the Maharashtra Assembly over the alleged phone tapping case against IPS officer Rashmi Shukhla after claiming they were not being allowed to discuss the matter in the House.

As the House proceedings began, Congress member Nana Patole raised the issue saying he was one of the leaders whose phone was allegedly tapped.

A Pune court had directed the local police to further investigate the alleged phone tapping case against Shukla after the police filed a closure report citing lack of evidence. A case was registered against Shukla at Bund Garden police station in Pune in February 2022 under section 26 of the Indian Telegraph Act when the Shiv Sena-NCP-Congress's Maha Vikas Aghadi government was in power in Maharashtra.
