'Hindi Is India's Root': Bageshwar Dham Chief Dhirendra Shastri After Stalin's Language 'Imposition' Claim

Bageshwar Dham chief Dhirendra Shastri has responded to MK Stalin's accusations against the central government over the "imposition of Hindi".

Hindi Language Imposition Row: A controversy has erupted over the alleged imposition of the Hindi language. Tamil Nadu and Kerala have accused the central government of imposing Hindi. Now, Bageshwar Dham chief Dhirendra Krishna Shastri has waded into the controversy, saying Hindi is the root of this country.

Dhirendra Shastri said, "This [language row] is the biggest misfortune of this country. Hindi is the original language of this country. Languages may be different, but there should not be any discrimination against any language. Hindi is the root of this country as well as its head."

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has adopted an aggressive stance towards the central government over Hindi and is accusing it of imposing Hindi on the people of the state. On Wednesday, Stalin demanded that Tamil be given equal status as Hindi and made an official language.

He said Sanskrit is a dead language and appealed for more funds for the Tamil language. Stalin described the installation of the Sengol in Parliament as a mere symbolic step. The Tamil Nadu CM also objected to celebrating 'Hindi Pakhwada' in the state and called it a waste of taxpayers' money. "Rather than installing Sengol in Parliament, uninstall Hindi from Union Government offices in Tamil Nadu. Instead of hollow praise, make Tamil an official language on par with Hindi and allot more funds for Tamil than a dead language like Sanskrit," he said.

Three-Language Formula At The Centre Of Row

Under the new education policy 2020, three languages will be taught in all government and private schools in the country. Two of these will be Indian languages, while the other will be another language.

However, no language has been made compulsory in this. States and schools are free to decide which three languages they want to teach. Many states in South India, including Tamil Nadu and Kerala, are objecting to this formula and alleging that a conspiracy is being hatched to impose the Hindi language on them.
