Kerala Ragging: Student Beaten, Forced To Drink Water Spat Into By Seniors At Karyavattom Govt College

The anti-ragging committee of Karyavattom Government College reportedly confirmed the occurrence of the incident and forwarded the complaint to Kazhakkoottam police for further action.

Another ragging incident has emerged at Karyavattom Government College in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, where a first-year biotechnology student has accused seven third-year students of harassment. In his complaint, he alleged that his seniors physically assaulted him and subjected him to degrading acts of humiliation. He also claimed that he was beaten and forced to drink water spat into by his seniors.

According to the complaint, the incident occurred following a clash between senior and junior students on February 11, 2025. The altercation reportedly began after the complainant’s friend was allegedly beaten by seniors, leading to both parties filing police complaints, as per a report on The Hindu. However, the situation escalated when the senior students allegedly abducted the complainant, tied him up in a room, and subjected him to brutal physical abuse.

The victim recounted being forced to kneel while the seniors repeatedly beat him on his back and face. Even after he collapsed, the assault continued. In a particularly degrading act, when he requested water, the seniors allegedly spat into a bottle before giving it to him to drink, as per a report on Mathrubhumi.

"I was then taken to the unit room and locked up there. My shirt was removed, and they made me kneel. When I asked for water to drink, one of the senior students spat into a half glass of water and gave it," Jose recalled to PTI.

The college’s anti-ragging committee launched an investigation into the incident, reviewing CCTV footage and gathering witness statements. The committee has reportedly confirmed the occurrence of the incident, and the complaint has been forwarded to the Kazhakkoottam police for further action, reported Times of India.

This incident is not an isolated case in Kerala. Earlier this year, five students were arrested for a similarly horrifying ragging incident in the college’s boys’ hostel. The first-year nursing students were reportedly stripped naked, tied to a cot, and subjected to physical torture, including being stabbed with a compass, having dumbbells placed on their private parts, and being forced to consume facial cream.
