AAP Fields Gopal Italia As Candidate For Visavadar Assembly Bypolls In Gujarat

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has nominated Gopal Italia as its candidate for the Visavadar Assembly byelection in Gujarat.

AAP leader Gopal Italia has been fielded by the party for the Visavadar assembly bypolls.

Aam Aadmi Party on Sunday announced its leader Gopal Italia as the candidate for the upcoming Visavadar Assembly byelections in Gujarat. Currently party's joint general secretary, Italia had been AAP's convener in the state previously. 

Taking to social media, AAP announced Italia's candidature from Visavadar assembly constituency number 87.

Italia joined the Aam Aadmi Party in 2020 and was made the Vice President of the party in Gujarat. Later, in December of the same year, he was given the responsibility of the party's President. He has been associated with the Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti. 

He primarily belongs from Botad in Gujarat and has served in the Gujarat Police. Additionally, he also worked as a revenue clerk.

Byelection Due To AAP MLA Resignation 

Visavadar, under Junagadh district is one of the 182 assembly sears in Guajarat and has long been a stronghold of the BJP. The saffron party had been winning the seat from 1995 to 2007. However, in 2012, the Gujarat Parivartan Party won this seat. 

In 2014, the Congress claimed the seat and again won in 2017. In the 2022 elections, this seat was won by the Aam Aadmi Party. The elected member from AAP, Bhupendrabhai Bhayani, resigned from the party and the seat has been remained vacant since 2023. 

Bhayani joined BJP and saffron party candidate Harshad Ribadiya filed a petition in the High Court, questioning Bhayani's victory. After completing the hearing, the court cleared the way for elections on March 12.
