JNU Violence: Several Injured In Attack By Masked Goons; Police Says Situation Normal Now

New Delhi:  A violent clash erupted in the campus of Jawaharlal Nehru University on Sunday, in which several students including JNU Student Union President Aishe Ghosh, and some teachers have been badly injured. As per the formation received so far 18 students have been gravely injured. A video of the incident has surfaced which shows several masked people brandishing lathis entering Sabarmati Girls Hostel. Several outsiders were also allegedly involved in the attack. As per AIIMS Trauma Centre official, "18 people from Jawaharlal Nehru University have come to AIIMS Trauma Centre with complaints of bleeding in head, abrasions among others. Investigations are underway." As per agencies, the clash took place during a public meeting organised by the JNU Teachers' Association in varsity campus. As per reports, outsiders were also involved. Situation normal inside campus now: Police Hours after the violence, and after heavy deployment of police inside campus, the Delhi police said that the situation inside the varsity has returned to normal.  Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southwest) Devender Arya said: "The situation inside the campus is normal. Extensive flag march conducted by police. All hostel areas have been secured. Police deployment has been done at strategic points." Heavy police force has been deployed at the main gate of the varsity. Delhi Police in a statement said, "tension was on between two groups for two days. On request of Jawaharlal Nehru University Administration police has entered the campus today." Following the reports of the violence, Delhi government had said it has sent seven ambulances to Jawaharlal Nehru University, while 10 ambulances have been kept at standby. Joint CP rank official will investigate and submit a report. Lieutenant General Anil Baijal said he has directed Delhi Police to take all possible steps in coordination with JNU Administration to maintain law and order and take action against the perpetrators of violence. Students protest outside Police HQ:  Several students gathered outside Delhi Police headquarters and staged protests against attack on students at Jawaharlal Nehru University. "I have been brutally attacked by goons wearing masks. I have been bleeding. I was brutally beaten up," she was quoted as saying by news agency ANI. It is not yet clear who led the attack on Ghosh and the students, however, the left and the ABVP both have accused each other of the violence. General Secretary Satish Chandra was also injured, and some teachers had also been allegedly assaulted. The miscreants have now reportedly fled. ABVP, Left Accuse Each Other Of Violence: Earlier, the Akhil Bhartiya Vidhayrthi Parishad (ABVP) accused Left students of vandalising the Periyar hostel of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and severely injuring various students present inside the hostel. "Around four to five hundred members of the Left gathered around the Periyar hostel, vandalised the hostel and forcibly entered the hostel to thrash the ABVP activists inside," ABVP's JNU unit President Durgesh was quoted as saying by the IANS. The ABVP claims its presidential candidate Manish Jangid was injured badly and may have suffered a fractured hand. However, the JNUSU led by the Left student wing was quick to brush off claims and instead targeted the ABVP and the administration for spreading false narrative. "The ABVP and administration have been targeting the students' protest against the fee hike. This is nothing but a false allegation to misguide students and the society," JNUSU General Secretary Satish Chandra was quoted as saying.
