Earthquake Of 3.6 Magnitude Hits Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri District

The epicentre of the tremor, which occurred at 3:49 AM, was the mountainous areas of Rajouri.

A mild intensity earthquake of 3.6 magnitude hit Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district in the early hours of Thursday. However, there were no reports of any damage. According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake occurred at 3:49 am. The epicentre was the mountainous areas of Rajouri and the depth was measured at 10 kilometres below the surface, at a latitude of 33.33 degrees north and a longitude of 74.20 degrees.

This comes after an earthquake struck Uttar Pradesh's Noida on Wednesday night, according to the National Centre for Seismology. The earthquake occurred at 8.57 pm at a depth of 6 kilometres with the epicentre in the Sector-128 area of Noida, the NCS website showed.

Earlier in August, another earthquake had struck Jammu and Kashmir in Gulmarg. The quake measured 5.2 on the Richter scale. It occurred at around 8:36 am with its depth registered at 129 km. According to NCS, its epicentre was found at Latitude: 35.46 and Longitude: 73.32, respectively.

As per the seismic zoning map of the country, the total area is classified into four seismic zones. Zone V is seismically the most active region, while zone II is the least. Approximately, 11 per cent area of the country falls in Zone V, 18 per cent in Zone IV, 30 per cent in Zone III, and remaining in Zone II.  Jammu and Kashmir falls under Zone V. 

After a devasatating earthquake in 2005 in Jammu and Kashmir, which led to at least 1350 deaths, people are constructing buildings and houses that can withstand the earthquakes, Zaid Ahmad, a structural engineer told Hindustan times.
