Yoga Day: PM Modi To Lead Mega Event In Mysuru, Lakhs To Bend And Stretch Across India | Key Points

International Yoga Day 2022: The government has decided to make this year's Yoga Day celebrations a gala affair as Covid had stalled major public events for the last two years.

The Centre has lined up several events and functions to mark the eighth International Yoga Day on Tuesday, which will be led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a yoga event in Mysuru in Karnataka that would be attended by over 15,000 people. Integrating the event with the 75th year of India's Independence, 75 ministers of the Centre will perform yoga at 75 historical and cultural sites in the country. The government has decided to make this year's Yoga Day celebrations a gala affair as the Covid-19 pandemic had stalled major public events for the last two years.

International Yoga Day 2022: Key Developments

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi Modi will participate in a mass yoga event at Mysore Palace ground on the occasion of International Day of Yoga. As many as 19 'asanas' will be exhibited in 45 minutes and the event is slated to start at 6.30 am.
  • Union Minister for Ayush Sarbananda Sonowal and Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai will attend the event with PM Modi. The Prime Minister will also address the gathering in Mysuru for 20 minutes. Around 15,000 people, including 1,200 children, will take part in the event.
  • The Border Security Force (BSF) will celebrate International Day of Yoga at the India-Pakistan border at Attari-Wagah in Punjab's Amritsar. The programme will start at 6 am in the presence of MoS Defence Ajay Bhatt, BSF DIG Sanjay Gaur told ANI.
  • The BJP will organise yoga sessions at 75,000 places across the country. BJP president JP Nadda will attend a yoga session in Noida. Law Minister Kiren Rijiju will lead yoga day celebrations at Arunachal Pradesh's Dong, India's eastern-most village. The village is located near the point where borders of India, China and Myanmar meet.
  • Home Minister Amit Shah will participate in the yoga program at the famous Jyotirlinga Trimbakeshwar temple complex in Nashik, Maharashtra, while Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will be seen in Coimbatore.
  • External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will perform yoga at Delhi's Lotus Temple. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will take part at a yoga event at Delhi's Jantar Mantar.
  • To mark Yoga Day, the National Monuments Authority will organise an astrophysical analysis of the movement of the sun around the Qutub Minar, the Culture Ministry said in a statement. The study will determine if Qutub Minar is tilted at a certain angle, does it have any astronomical significance, and whether there is a zero shadow of the minaret at noon on June 21.
  • This year, the theme is "Yoga for Humanity". The theme portrays how yoga served humanity in alleviating suffering during the Covid pandemic, the PMO said in a statement.
  • The major attraction of the IDY celebrations will be the "Guardian Ring", whereby the events organised across the world on the occasion will be relayed throughout the day.
  • The idea of the International Day of Yoga was proposed by PM Narendra Modi in his speech at United Nations General Assembly in 2014. June 21 was picked as the date to celebrate Yoga Day as it is the longest day of the year.
