West Bengal Politics: Humayun Kabir Launches ‘Janta Unnayan Party’ in Murshidabad, Targets TMC and BJP Ahead of 2026 Polls

Former Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Humayun Kabir is set to formally announce his new political party, Janta Unnayan Party, in Murshidabad today, marking a major development in West Bengal’s political landscape ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. Kabir has already reached the event venue in Beldanga, where a large public gathering and show of strength are underway. Humayun Kabir was expelled from the TMC after he announced the laying of the foundation stone for a mosque modeled on the Babri Masjid in Murshidabad earlier this month. Since then, his political activities have intensified, culminating in the launch of his own party. He has made it clear that his political battle will be against both the ruling TMC and the BJP in Bengal. Kabir has announced that his party will contest 135 out of the total 294 Assembly seats in the 2026 elections. He also hinted at possible alliances with Congress, the Left parties, and AIMIM, raising speculation about a broader anti-TMC, anti-BJP front. The presence of AIMIM supporters with banners at the rally has further fueled talk of an emerging understanding between the two sides. Political observers believe Humayun Kabir’s move could significantly impact minority vote dynamics, particularly in Murshidabad, potentially posing a challenge for the TMC in key constituencies. The coming months are expected to clarify whether Janta Unnayan Party can emerge as a decisive third force in Bengal politics.
