PM Narendra Modi's Bilateral Talks With Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto
The discussions came two days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto reaffirmed their commitment to securing regional sea lanes. Their meeting addressed concerns over maritime security, particularly in light of China's increasing military assertiveness in the South China Sea.
A joint statement following the Modi-Subianto meeting highlighted their agreement on positioning an Indonesian liaison officer at India's IFC-IOR in Gurugram, which was established in 2018 to monitor shipping traffic and regional developments. The two leaders also emphasised the importance of a full and effective code of conduct in the South China Sea, aligned with international laws. President Subianto welcomed India's interest in strengthening maritime security cooperation, particularly its engagement with regional mechanisms to safeguard crucial sea lanes of communication.
Both leaders acknowledged the necessity of constant dialogue to enhance maritime safety and welcomed ongoing discussions on the White Shipping Information Exchange (WSIE) agreement.
