NEW DELHI: India is celebrating the birth anniversary of one of the most important modern Hindi poets Maithili Sharan Gupt. The Padma Bhushan recipient is considered one among the pioneers of Khari Boli (plain dialect) poetry and wrote in Khari Boli dialect.
Many politicians remembered him on his birth anniversary including Mamata Banerjee, INC, Yogi Adityanath and Piyush Goyal.

Who Was Maithili Sharan Gupt?
- Maithili Sharan Gupt was born in Chirgaon, Jhansi in Uttar Pradesh in the Kankane clan of the Gahoi community.
- He was born on 3 August 1886 to Seth Ramcharan Gupta and Kashibai.
- He took an active part in the freedom struggle where he used to propagate the nationalist ideals through his works.
- Maithili Sharan Gupt’s nationalist poems were theme songs for freedom fighters.
- It is said that he was given the title of Rashtra Kavi by Mahatma Gandhi.
