Himachal Reports Damage Of Rs 8,100 Crore In 2 Months Due To Monsoon As Deaths Rise To 346

The Himachal Pradesh government has declared the entire state a 'natural calamity'-affected area and urged the Centre to declare a national calamity of rare severity under the Disaster Management Act.

The devastation caused by monsoon rains has cost Himachal Pradesh around Rs 8,100 crore in two months. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu had earlier said that the state would take at least one year for the state to fully revive from the devastating impact of the rains this year.

The IMD declared the arrival of monsoon in the hill state this year on June 24. The heavy downpour and cloudbursts caused severe damage to various structures as they brought landslides and floods with them.

As a result, the government declared the entire state a 'natural calamity'-affected area and urged the Centre to declare a national calamity of rare severity under the provisions of the Disaster Management Act of 2005.

According to the Himachal Pradesh government, the monsoon rains caused damage to the tune of Rs 8099.46 crore. The number of deaths recorded in the disaster has so far gone up to 346, while 38 are still missing. As many as 331 people are reported to have been injured in various rain-related incidents. 

An astounding number of 2,216 houses have been completely damaged or swept away in rain, cloudbursts, floods, and landslides, while 9,819 residential structures have suffered partial damage. As many as 300 shops and 4,702 cow shelters were either swept away or destroyed.
The state has recorded 130 landslides and 60 flash floods so far.

The damages under various departments have been estimated as follows:

  • Jal Shakti Vibhag: Rs 1,860.52 crore

  • PWD: Rs 2,712.19 crore

  • Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board Ltd: 1,707.35 crore

  • Horticulture: Rs 173.3 crore

  • Urban development: Rs 88.82 crore

  • Agriculture department: Rs 335.73 crore

  • Rural development: Rs 369.53 crore

  • Education: Rs 118.90 crore

  • Fisheries: Rs 13.91 crore
  • Health: Rs 44.01 crore

The Centre has so far announced aid of Rs 200 crore while the Karnataka and Rajasthan governments have contributed Rs 15 crore each to help Himachal cope with the tragedy. The Chhattisgarh government has also contributed Rs 11 crore. On Tuesday the MK Stalin-led Tamil Nadu government, too, announced assistance of Rs 10 crore.
