Former Assam CM Tarun Gogoi Health Critical, On Ventilator After Battle With Covid-19

The three-times former chief minister on Saturday afternoon became "completely unconscious" after difficulty in breathing, Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma said. He also suffered multiple organ failures; the minister confirmed.

Veteran Congress leader and three-time chief minister of Assam Tarun Gogoi’s health conditions continue to remain “critical” despite some positive signs like "spontaneous eye-opening", the doctors who have been monitoring Gogoi’s health condition said.

The three-times former chief minister on Saturday afternoon became "completely unconscious" after difficulty in breathing, Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma said. He also suffered multiple organ failures; the minister confirmed.

The veteran Congress leader since Saturday has been put on life support at the Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), where his health is and efforts are being made to revive his organs with medicines and dialysis by a team of experienced doctors.

"He is now semi-conscious, and is hemodynamically stable but his health remains critical. He is maintaining pulse and blood pressure. There were some spontaneous hand and eye movements, which is a positive sign. But there is little urine output. There is very little improvement in his health parameters," hospital Superintendent Dr Abhijit Sarma told the media.

The GMCH doctors are also told to be in constant touch with experts from Delhi's premier All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) who have ruled out the possibility of shifting the former CM outside the state in this condition.

All decisions related to Mr Gogoi's health are being taken in consultation with the AIIMS experts. We will observe his health very closely for the next 24 hours. We expect he will come out of this critical situation very soon," said Dr Sharma.

The Congress leader was tested positive for Covid-19 disease on August 25 and was further admitted to the GMCH for treatment the very next day. The leader took around two months to recover from the disease.

Following the post-Covid-19 health complications, earlier this month, on November 2, the former chief minister had to be re-admitted to the hospital and was on non-invasive ventilation till his condition deteriorated on Saturday.
