ED Records Statement Of Param Bir Singh In Connection With Money Laundering Case

As per the report, he was interrogated for around five hours in which he was questioned on different aspects of the case including the allegations he levelled against Anil Deshmukh.

New Delhi: The Enforcement Directorate recorded the statement of the suspended Mumbai Commissioner of Police Param Bir Singh in connection with a money laundering probe into alleged irregularities in the Maharashtra police establishment, reported PTI.

The statement was recorded under the provisions of Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) on December 3 at the agency’s office in south Mumbai.

As per the report, 59 year old Singh was interrogated for around five hours in which he was questioned on different aspects of the case including the allegations he levelled against former Home Minister of Maharashtra, Anil Deshmukh.

ED had summoned Singh at least three times in the past but he did not depose. The report stated that he may be summoned again.

Singh was suspended by the Maharashtra Government a few days back after police FIRs on charges of extortion were registered against him and some other police personnel. The report said that his statement was “vital” to take forward the investigation of this case. The Enforcement Directorate had arrested former Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh and his aides in this case.

The 1998 batch Indian Police Service Officer had alleged Deshmukh of corruption and misuse of official power after he was shunted from his post of Police Commissioner of Mumbai following the Antilia bomb scare incident.

Singh had raised allegations against Dekhmukh of asking police officers to collect Rs 100 crore from restaurants and bars in Mumbai every month. Deshmukh had denied all such allegations.

The IPS officer was declared absconding by Mumbai and Thane courts, surfaced in public lte last month after being underground for almost six months. Singh moved to the Supreme Court after which he was granted temporary protection from arrest.
