Delhi: Juvenile driver kills 2, injures 3 near Kashmere Gate

New Delhi: A speeding vehicle with the class 12 student behind the wheel ran over four pedestrians sleeping on a footpath near ISBT, Kashmere Gate on Thursday morning. The police confirmed the death of two pedestrians, with the other three being severely injured. The time of the incident was reported to be 5.45 a.m but, the authorities at the Police Control Room were notified about it a half hour later at 6.15 a.m. The deceased has not yet been identified. The identity of the other three individuals has been revealed as Asif, Karan and Sanjay each of them are in very critical condition. Soon after the incident, the two were admitted in the Sushruta Trauma Centre hospital  near Civil Lines. The investigative report states, that ‘the driver had lost control over his car – an i20, coming from the Ring Road direction, consequently causing the footpath fatalities’. Jatin Narwal, the Deputy Commissioner of Police in the North district, says that it was the locals who caught the driver, and handed him over to the police, after what had transpired. The Deputy Commissioner said the driver claims to be a teenager, and resides in Model Town in north Delhi. The police has refused to reveal the accused’s name until  his age can be ascertained, in the scenario that it turns out  to be a juvenile case. "We are verifying his age. He told us that he was accompanied by his two friends," Narwal said. "He was driving his friend's father's car. His friends fled the scene after the accident" he added. A blood test was also conducted on the accused to check if he was in an inebriated state at the time of the incident. As per the cops, the four victims are homeless daily wage labourers, who usually sleep on the Kashmere Gate pavement. A case has been filed at the Kashmere Gate Police Station and the investigation is underway.
