Population Census News: The Amit Shah-led Ministry of Home Affairs has issued the official notification for the conduct of the National Population Census in 2027.
The notification issued under Section 3 of the Census Act, 1948 (37 of 1948), read: "A census of the population of India shall be taken during the year 2027. The reference date for the said census shall be 00.00 hours of March 1, 2027, except for the Union territory of Ladakh and snow-bound non-synchronous areas of the Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir and the States of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand."
"In respect of the Union territory of Ladakh and snow-bound non-synchronous areas of the Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir and the States of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, the reference date shall be 00:00 hours of October 1, 2026," it added.
The Centre had announced plans to conduct the Census on June 4. It will be conducted in two phases. In the hilly regions of the north early. India's population census will start from October 1, 2026, in Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand and Himachal, the sources said.
A caste census will also be conducted along with the population census.
