Sirens, Blackout In Amritsar Days After Ceasefire, IndiGo Flight Enroute To Punjab City Returns To Delhi

Deputy Commissioner Amritsar urged people to switch off their lights and move away from your windows after hearing a siren.

A blackout was initiated in Punjab's Amritsar on Monday evening as a precautionary measure by the authorities amid recent tensions between India and Pakistan, a senior official said.

Deputy Commissioner Amritsar urged people to switch off their lights and move away from your windows after hearing a siren. Punjab shares a 553-kilometre-long border with Pakistan.

"You will hear a siren. We are on alert and initiating the blackout. Please switch off your lights and move away from your windows. Stay calm, we will inform when ready to restore the power supply. Don't panic at all. This is by way of abundant caution," Deputy Commissioner Amritsar said.

An IndiGo flight enroute to Amritsar returned to New Delhi on Monday evening amid the blackout measures, sources said.

The flight 6E2045 from Delhi to Amritsar returned to the national capital after being airborne for sometime, as per information available on flight tracking website Flightradar24.com.

The sources said the flight had to return as the Amritsar airport was closed due to the precautionary blackout. However, there was no comment from IndiGo.

Amritsar was among the 32 airports that were reopened for civilian flights on Monday after being temporarily shut in the wake of the military conflict between India and Pakistan.

Meanwhile, there have been no blackouts reported in the border areas of Rajasthan on Monday.

All restrictions on movement, clamped in view of the armed conflict between India and Pakistan, were lifted. Educational institutions will reopen on Tuesday. The blackout call has been withdrawn in Jaisalmer, Bikaner, Barmer, and other border areas, an official said.
