Bengaluru’s nightlife could soon see a significant change as the Karnataka government is exploring the possibility of extending pub and microbrewery operating hours until 1 AM. Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar revealed the proposal during a session in the Karnataka Legislative Council, indicating a shift in policy towards nighttime businesses in the city.
Legislative Council Discusses Bengaluru Night Life
This discussion follows the government’s recent decision to allow hotels, restaurants, and bars to remain open until 1 AM. If implemented, the new rules would grant standalone pubs—currently required to close by 11:30 PM—greater operational flexibility. Shivakumar, who also oversees Bengaluru’s administration, stated that the matter would be thoroughly reviewed alongside Home Minister G Parameshwara and Excise Minister RB Timmapur before any final decision is made, as per a report on Deccan Herald.
At present, microbreweries and pubs in the city operate between 10 AM and 11:30 PM, with strict enforcement of closing times. Over the past three years, 11 establishments have faced legal action for violating these regulations, reported One India. Excise Minister Timmapur reiterated the government’s commitment to enforcing the law.
Highlighting Bengaluru’s status as a global technology and business hub, Shivakumar argued that professionals working late hours should have more options for recreation.
The issue gained traction after BJP MLA HS Gopinath raised it in the Legislative Council. Responding to concerns, Shivakumar assured that the government would evaluate the proposal carefully, balancing economic interests with public safety and civic concerns.
In January this year, Karnataka government announced a hike in beer prices in Bengaluru. The government mentioned that aim of the move was to address the revenue shortfall in the excise department. The cost of a 650ml beer bottle went up by Rs 10-45, reported Times of India.
The move came even as the department made record sales in the past financial year.
