Assam Floods: Death Toll Rises To 56 As 8 More Casualties Recorded In 24 Hours
Assam Floods: The monsoon heavy rainfall in Assam has inundated several regions in the state. Over 42,476.18 hectares of crop areas have been damaged and over 2,800 villages are under water.
Eight people were killed in Assam on Wednesday, taking the death toll to 56. According to a PTI report, more than 16.25 lakh people are reeling under the deluge across 27 districts, an official bulletin stated.

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) report said that two persons died in Tezpur revenue circle of Sonitpur district, while one each drowned at Mayong of Morigaon, Naharkatia of Dibrugarh, Pub Mangaladi of Darrang, Dergaon of Golaghat, Halem of Biswanath and Margherita of Tinsukia.
Three more people are missing and feared to have been washed away by the flood in the districts of Sonitpur, Sivasagar and Golaghat.
Several Districts Hit By Assam Floods
The bulletin stated that over 16.25 lakh people were affected by the floods in Hojai, Jorhat, Kamrup, Kamrup Metropolitan, East Karbi Anglong, West Karbi Anglong, Karimganj, Lakhimpur, Majuli, Morigaon, Nagaon, Nalbari, Sivasagar, Sonitpur, Barpeta, Biswanath, Cachar, Charaideo, Chirang, Darrang, Dhemaji, Dhubri, Dibrugarh, Goalpara, Golaghat, Hailakandi, and Tinsukia.

Among these districts, the worst hit is Dhubri, with over 2.23 lakh people affected by the floods, followed by Darrang where close to 1.84 lakh people are affected and Lakhimpur with more than 1.66 lakh people reeling under the deluge.

The flood damaged over 42,476.18 hectares of crop areas and over 2,800 villages are under water, PTI reported. Over 11.20 lakh domestic animals were also affected by the floods.
Meanwhile, in Kaziranga National Park the situation has turned grim, with at least 17 animals, including a rhino calf and a hog deer having drowned. As many as 72 animals have been rescued by forest authorities so far, reported news agency ANI. An official told the news agency that 32 wild animals are undergoing treatment, while 25 have been released.
Infrastructure Affected
Flood water has damaged embankments roads bridges and other infrastructure. The Brahmaputra and its tributaries are flowing well above the danger mark. The overflowing Brahmaputra has damaged 74 roads, 14 embankments, and 6 bridges, as per news agency IANS.
Brahmaputra is flowing above the danger marks in Nimatighat, Tezpur, Guwahati, Goalpara, and Dhubri, reported news agency PTI.
The ASDMA said the Barak is flowing above the danger mark in AP Ghat, BP Ghat, Chotabakra, and Fuletrak. Its tributaries, Dhaleswari, Katakhal, and Kushiyara are flowing above the danger mark at Gharmura, Matizuri, and Karimganj town, respectively.
Rescue & Relief Operations
ASDMA has opened 515 relief camps, and relief distribution centres in 24 districts, reportedly, 3,86,950 people have taken shelter at these camps. Around 8,400 people have been rescued by the civil administration, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and emergency services from different parts of the state.
The Indian army is also involved in rescue and relief operations in Assamas as well as Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh.
