Ahmedabad Civic Body Razes 'Illegal Settlements' Near Chandola Lake: 'Most Residents From Bangladesh'

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation demolished illegal settlements near Chandola Lake, where many Bangladeshis reportedly lived.

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) demolished illegal settlements near Chandola Lake on Tuesday. According to ANI, Joint CP (Crime), Sharad Singhal said that a majority of the people who lived in "Siyasatnagar Bangal Vaas" were from Bangladesh.   

Several excavator machines were lined up at the location, tearing down the shanties set up near the lake. A total of 50 excavators were at the spot, and 2000 police personnel were deployed in the area, reported ANI.

As per Singhal, the AMC had surveyed illegal construction, following which the demolition drive was conducted.

"There was a Siyasatnagar Bangal Vaas where a majority of Bangladeshis used to stay...AMC conducted a survey in which it was found that illegal construction was done. A demolition drive is underway. A total of 50 JCBs are working here, and around 2,000 police personnel are deployed here", the police official told ANI.

There is a statewide crackdown on illegal immigration, the Umargam Police detained seven illegal Bangladeshi immigrants. Valsad Superintendent of Police (SP) Karanraj Vaghela stated that the detained immigrants would first be interrogated, after which the deportation process would be initiated.

"Workers of a garment factory were questioned, and six men and a woman were detained. They are Bangladeshis. They went to Nepal from Bangladesh and then entered India illegally via West Bengal. They will be questioned and then the process of deporting them will begin," Vaghela said as per ANI.

On April 27, Vadodara Police apprehended over 500 suspected Bangladeshi nationals. Speaking to ANI, Vadodara Police Commissioner Narsingh Komar stated that the individuals had been "intercepted" and that verification of their documents was currently in progress.
