'Against Idea Of India': BJP Ally And Meghalaya CM Sangma As Debate Intensifies On Uniform Civil Code

Meghalaya CM and BJP ally Conrad Sangma said that Uniform Civil Code is against the 'idea of actual India'. Meanwhile, several opposition leaders have sought the draft proposal of UCC.

Amid the ongoing debate over the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), Bhartiya Janta Party's (BJP) partner in Meghalaya, the National People's Party (NPP) has said that the UCC goes against the 'idea of actual India'. Speaking on the issue, CM Conrad Sangma said that India is a diverse nation and diversity is its strength. He said that as a party, NPP realises that the entire northeast has a unique culture and "we would want that to remain".

"Uniform Civil Code goes against the actual idea of India. India is a diverse nation and diversity is our strength. As a political party, we realise that the entire northeast has unique culture and we would want that to remain," Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma told ANI.

Meanwhile, several opposition leaders have sought the draft proposal of the Code before any kind of discussion is picked up on the matter. Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi should first inform the country what is the proposal for UCC and on what issues he want uniformity.

"Until a proposal is put forward, there is no need for a debate (on UCC). Uttarakhkand's Civil Code cannot be implemented across the country. People are not completely aware of the law, but there are discussions going on," the former Congress leader said.

Speaking on the same, Uddhav Thackeray faction leader and MP Sanjay Raut told ANI, "Mumbai's BJP is a complete drama. We are continuously putting up a demand to hold elections in Maharashtra but they (BJP) are scared of it... The draft of UCC has not come yet, we will think about UCC once the draft is released."

Meanwhile, Goa CM Pramod Sawant supported the UCC and said that it is important for women's empowerment and gender quality in the country.

He said, "Many parties are doing politics on UCC. It means they don't want the empowerment of women and gender quality. UCC is not based on caste and religion. It should be implemented in the country soon".

Uttar Pradesh Deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya said that some people are against UCC, "but the majority are supporting it and this is the beauty of democracy. The laws for everyone, irrespective of the religion, should be the same".
