Afghanistan Crisis: Following PM Modi's Directive, EAM Jaishankar To Brief All Parties On Thursday

Previously, Prime Minister Narendra Modi directed all concerned officials to undertake necessary measures so that the safe evacuation of Indian nationals from Afghanistan is ensured.

New Delhi: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) will brief the floor leaders of political parties on Thursday about recent developments in Afghanistan at Parliament House Annexe in Delhi.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has instructed the MEA to brief the political parties about the ongoing situation, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar revealed.

Informing about PM Modi's directive, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar took to Twitter and wrote: "In view of developments in Afghanistan, PM Narendra Modi has instructed that MEA brief Floor Leaders of political parties. Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Pralhad Joshi will be intimating further details".

Following the announcement, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi informed that Jaishankar's briefing to the Floor Leaders is going to take place on August 26 at Parliament House Annexe in Delhi.

The briefing comes at a time when the Indian government is evacuating Indian nationals and Afghans stuck in the war-torn country after the Taliban took over Kabul.

Previously, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 17 chaired a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) and directed all concerned officials to undertake necessary measures so that the safe evacuation of Indian nationals from Afghanistan is ensured.

The MEA had committed to ensuring the safe return of all Indian nationals from Afghanistan while it stated the main challenge for travel to and from the country to be the operational status of the Kabul airport.

India on Sunday brought back nearly 400 people on three different flights.

Another group of 87 Indians and two Nepalese nationals were brought back in a special Air India flight from Dushanbe, a day after they were evacuated to the Tajikistan capital in an IAF aircraft, news agency ANI reported.

Besides this, 135 Indians, who were taken from Kabul to Doha in the last few days by the US and NATO aircraft, were also flown back to Delhi on a special flight.

The Afghanistan crisis escalated quickly as the Taliban entered the presidential palace in the Afghan capital on August 15 and declared its victory over the government after months of violence in the country.
