Honda Activa 5G vs TVS Jupiter ZX Disc: Spec Comparo

We put the two biggest rivals in the scooter segment against each other on paper

Honda Activa 5G vs TVS Jupiter ZX Disc: Spec Comparo

While the Honda Activa might still be the undisputed champion in the scooter segment, it's been facing some stiff competition from its main rival, the TVS Jupiter, ever since the latter’s launch. To keep up with the growing competition, Honda managed to give the Activa some a refreshed look for 2018 with a new paint scheme a couple of features. But is that enough to keep the competition at bay? We find out just that by comparing the two against each other on paper, and here’s how the Activa stacks up.

Design & Features -

The duo are designed to cater to a family-oriented target market, but they lean more towards the feminine side. While both scooters target a mature audience, the well-defined surfacing on the Jupiter with blacked out mechanicals appeals to the younger generation as well. The Activa, on the other hand, with its tried and tested design, looks a bit dated compared to its competition. That said, the Activa 5G does feature a bright LED headlamp in contrast to the Jupiter which uses a conventional halogen unit. While this might be a downside for the Jupiter, it does hit back with LED tail lights. The Activa gets an analogue digital instrument cluster with ‘Eco’ speed indicator while the one on the Jupiter is all-analogue. Comparably, the Jupiter also features an ‘Eco’ and ‘Power’ indicator which aids with throttle modulation and facilitates better fuel efficiency.

In terms of features, both scooters get an apron hook and a hook under the seat. The Activa has an 18-litre underseat storage, which is a whole litre bigger than its rival, the Jupiter. But this is where the Jupiter really takes off as it features an external fuel filler cap for added convenience, while the Activa’s fuel cap sits under the seat. Moreover, the Jupiter gets a double-sided lock which basically enables you to lock the steering in either direction, which the Activa’s handle can only be locked when tilted towards the left. The ZX variant of the Jupiter receives a ‘Duracool’ seat, which according to TVS is 10-degree Celsius cooler in the heat when compared to normal seats.

Both the scooters are pretty similar in terms of power output, but the Activa is a bit more torquey. Having more torque at your disposal means riding two-up is a stress-free affair. However, according to our road tests, the Jupiter clocked a 0-60kmph time of only 9.16 seconds while the Activa managed a time of 10.55 seconds. The Activa returns a fuel efficiency figure of 60kmpl while the company claimed fuel figure for the Jupiter stands at 62kmpl.

The Jupiter features telescopic forks up front and a single shock at the rear, while the Activa sticks to a conventional bottom-link unit in the front and a single shock at the rear. Owing to the better equipment on the Jupiter, its ride is unquestionably more comfortable although its seat is a little too soft for our liking. Moving to the braking department, the Jupiter gets an option of a 220mm disc on the ZX variant, aside from the Sync Brake System (SBS)-equipped drum brakes. Moreover, the Jupiter’s larger 12-inch wheels offer more confidence while turning and effectively tackling potholes. On the other hand, the Activa only gets drum brakes with Combi Brake System (CBS). Essentially, SBS and CBS work on the same theory of distributing braking force equally between the front and rear brakes while pulling on just the rear brake lever.

The Jupiter’s longer wheelbase translates to better stability at high speeds. While handling might not be the Activa’s forte, it does come with a slightly larger fuel tank, which keeps you on the road longer.

While the Honda Activa 5G might be the best selling scooter in the market, the ZX Disc variant of the TVS Jupiter seems to steal the show with its looks, features and overall riding dynamics. Furthermore, for a premium of a little over Rs 1,000, you can opt for the Jupiter Classic Edition which comes complete with a windshield, chrome grab rails with cushioned backrest and dual-tone premium seat.

That said, the Honda will prove to be a good option as it has stood the test of time. It may not be the best in terms of features but does manage to live up to the scootering duties expected from a family scooter.
