A Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI), Moti Ram Jat, has been arrested for allegedly spying for Pakistan, according to sources. Jat was transferred from Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir—just six days before a deadly terrorist attack struck the area sources told ABP News. It was also revealed that initial alerts about his alleged contacts with Pakistani handlers surfaced while he was still posted in Pahalgam.

The accused was earlier stationed with the 116th battalion of the CRPF in Pahalgam before being moved to Delhi. He was arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in the capital.

According to the NIA, Jat has been involved in sharing sensitive operational intelligence with Pakistani Intelligence Officers (PIOs) since 2023 in exchange for money. The leaked information reportedly included movement patterns of Indian security forces, details of key military installations, and other confidential data.

“Concurrently, the individual has been dismissed from service with effect from 21.05.2025, under the relevant provisions of the Constitution of India read with the CRPF Rules,” the CRPF said in a statement. The statement also mentioned that Jat’s social media activity “acted in violation of established norms and protocols,” which triggered suspicion.

Sources of ABP news revealed that Jat came under scrutiny during his deployment in Pahalgam, the very area where 26 civilians—mostly Hindu tourists—were killed in a recent terrorist attack. While there is currently no direct evidence linking Jat to the planning of the Pahalgam attack, investigators are not ruling out the possibility of deeper connections.

The accused was produced before a special court and has been remanded to NIA custody until June 6. He is being intensively interrogated by NIA officials to unravel the extent of the espionage network.

According to a report in The Hindu, Pakistani operatives contacted Jat on social media while posing as a woman and subsequently obtained sensitive information from him, including details about convoy movements. It was also found that the CRPF jawan was receiving Rs 3,000 per month in his account from foreign account.

“He was posted for law and order duty. The CRPF conducts internal monitoring on the usage of social media by its personnel. During the monitoring, it was found that ₹3,000 had been deposited in his (the Assistant Sub Inspector’s) account per month from a foreign account, which raised the red flags,” the Hindu report said a government official as saying.

A significant development has emerged in the case of CRPF Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Moti Ram Jat, who was arrested for allegedly spying for Pakistan. Jat was posted in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, and was transferred to Delhi just one week before the deadly terrorist attack in the area. During his deployment in Pahalgam, intelligence agencies discovered that he was in contact with Pakistani handlers.

CRPF’s internal monitoring system, which tracks the online activities of its personnel, flagged Jat's suspicious behavior on social media. This led to his transfer to Delhi, where he underwent intense questioning. It was subsequently confirmed that he had shared sensitive information related to India with Pakistani intelligence operatives. Following this, he was arrested and handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), which is currently interrogating him.

While there is no direct evidence yet linking him to the planning of the Pahalgam terror attack, the NIA is investigating any potential connections.

Over the past two weeks, authorities have arrested 13 individuals from Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh on charges of spying for Pakistan. Among those arrested are two women, Jyoti Malhotra from Haryana — a prominent influencer with 3.77 lakh YouTube subscribers and 1.33 lakh Instagram followers — and 31-year-old Guzala from Punjab. Both were allegedly in contact with Ehsan-ur-Rahim, alias Danish, a staffer at the Pakistani High Commission, since November 2023. The Indian government expelled Danish on May 13 for his involvement in espionage activities.
