The Bharatiya Janata Party on Monday declared Mohan Yadav as the next chief minister of Madhya Pradesh, days after the saffron party registered a thumping victory in the assembly elections in the state. Yadav hails from Ujjain South. Yadav, a three-time MLA and leader of the Other Backward Classes (OBC), was the former Higher Education Minister of the state.
The BJP's victory in the November 17 assembly polls, securing 163 seats in the 230-member assembly, solidified its position in the state. The Congress, in contrast, trailed behind with 66 seats. Earlier, Kamal Nath met former MP CM Shivraj Singh Chohan at his residence in Bhopal on Monday.
After his meeting with Chouhan, Kamal Nath said that he has given him an assurance that, as an opposition party, Congress will do whatever it takes for the development of the state. The president of the grand old party's MP unit further stated that a meeting of the party's candidates has been called and a study will be done over the loss in the state.
Speaking to the reporters, Kamal Nath said, "I met CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan and congratulated him for the victory. He also came to meet me when I became the CM. I assured him that as the opposition, we will do whatever it takes for the development of the state...I have called a meeting of all the candidates of our party. We will do a study of our loss. I will also visit Delhi and meet Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge."
