'CAA Our Commitment, We'll Do It': Bengal BJP Chief After Amit Shah Assures Implementation

On Tuesday, Suvendu Adhikari said that Union Minister Amit Shah has assured that the CAA will be rolled out in the country after the Covid precaution dose vaccination exercise was over.

New Delhi: After Union Minister Amit Shah assured of implementing the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), West Bengal BJP chief Sukanta Majumdar on Wednesday said that the Act was a "core issue" for Bengal BJP and that they will "do it" in the state as well. "We'll give citizenship to refugees from Bangladesh," Majumdar told news agency ANI.

"CAA is our commitment, we'll do it. CAA is core issue for Bengal BJP the way Ram Mandir was an issue for All India BJP. We'll give citizenship to refugees from Bangladesh. People are forced to come because of atrocities committed on Hindus," he told the news agency.

On Tuesday, Bengal Leader of Oppoisiton Suvendu Adhikari said that Union Minister Amit Shah has assured that the CAA will be rolled out in the country after the Covid precaution dose vaccination exercise was over. The remarks came from Adhikari after meeting Amit Shah in Parliament House as per a PTI report.

"A lot of things were discussed. But I had two main agendas. The Home Minister assured me of taking an action to root out SSC recruitment scam and to release CAA draft after Covid precaution dose exercise," ANI quoted Adhikari as saying. The government launched precautionary dose vaccination in April this year.

As per PTI report, Adhikari told reporters that CAA, slammed by critics for its alleged anti-Muslim bias, implementation was very critical for West Bengal as a large number of people would benefit from its provisions.

The CAA seeks to grant Indian citizenship to non-Muslims minorities — Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians — who have migrated from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan till December 31, 2014. The Act, which saw vociferous protests across the nation, especially Assam, is yet to be rolled out as the government has not framed the rules.
