'Not A Question Of Man Or Woman, But...': BJP On Mahua Moitra's Lok Sabha Expulsion

Bharatiya Janata Party MP and Ethics Committee member Aparajita Sarangi expressed disapproval of Moitra's conduct, describing it as "unethical".

After Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra's expulsion from the Lok Sabha in connection with the 'cash for query' case, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP and Ethics Committee member Aparajita Sarangi expressed disapproval of Moitra's conduct, describing it as "unethical". Moitra's removal followed a discussion on the Ethics Committee's report in the Lower House on Friday.

"I am also a woman, I want to say that whether woman or man, we all are MPs, as per the system, both women and men MPs need to work, Mahua Moitra has done unethical conduct, so it should be condemned. If the opposition is standing with her, then they are supporting a wrong thing," stated Aparajita Sarangi. She emphasised that Moitra's expulsion serves as a lesson to all MPs, reinforcing the importance of adhering to the rules and maintaining moral standards in parliamentary proceedings.

"The whole country is watching us...In Mahua Moitra's case, immorality was visible...this is the reason why she was expelled from Lok Sabha," Sarangi added. Moitra, in response to her expulsion, alleged that she had been found guilty of breaching a code of ethics that she claimed 'does not exist'. Read the full report here

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi responded to questions about Moitra's inability to speak during the Lok Sabha debate, citing Moitra's acceptance of the charges against her. Joshi emphasised that Moitra admitted to receiving certain items and questioned her behaviour in Parliament, claiming that her expulsion was justified by her acceptance of the allegations.

"Mahua accepted the allegation and she said that she got certain brands' scarf, lipstick, she did not deny all this," Joshi said.

West Bengal BJP chief and MP Sukanta Majumdar commented on the expulsion, comparing it to previous actions by other parties. He emphasised the importance of accused individuals presenting their cases before the Ethics Committee and chastised Moitra for leaving without answering questions.

"Earlier too Congress had suspended 10 MPs in a day. This isn't happening for the first time. Yes, it might be happening for the first time in the history of West Bengal. The accused can never present his side in the Lok Sabha, if the accused has to present the side it has to be infront of the Ethics Committee. Mahua Moitra was called before the committee. She presented her side for some time. Later, when she had to answer the questions, she could not answer and ran away. If you had to give any answer, you should have given it in front of the committee," he was quoted as saying by ANI.
