2018 Triumph Tiger 1200 XCx: 5 Things To Know

Triumph has finally launched the 2018 Tiger 1200 XCx in India. The British bikemaker claims that the latest Tiger 1200 XCx features more than 100 changes over the outgoing version. And hence, we thought it would be a good idea to pen down the five noteworthy things that you must know about Triumph ’s top-spec adventure tourer.

1. Stylish Looks and Design Upgrades

In terms of styling and looks, the most noteworthy change is the all-LED lighting and full-colour TFT instrument console, just like the 2018 Tiger 800. Triumph has also made a few subtle changes to the faring and body, like the new metal tank badge. The Tiger 1200 still retains its iconic silhouette and overall, the bike looks quite captivating.

2. More Powerful Engine

Powering the 2018 Tiger 1200 XCx is the same 1215cc in-line three-cylinder engine which generates a maximum power of 141PS at 9350rpm and peak torque of 122Nm at 7600rpm, mated to a 6-speed gearbox. Although the engine is unchanged, it now generates more power thanks to a lighter flywheel, crankshaft, and magnesium engine covers on the 2018 model. This makes it the most powerful shaft-driven engine in its class. 

Also, Triumph has included a titanium Arrow exhaust and has lightened the frame and chassis due to which the bike now weighs 248kg (dry weight), 5kg less than the ongoing model. 

3. Next-Gen Features

The 2018 Tiger 1200 has received a significant upgrade as far as features are concerned. The bike receives an updated cruise control system, electronically adjustable windscreen, keyless ignition, a self-balancing semi-active suspension, quickshifter, cornering ABS, a hill-hold feature, adjustable traction control and adaptive cornering lighting. The new Tiger 1200 also features five different riding modes: Road, Rain, Sport, Off-Road, and Off-Road Pro (which turns off all rider assists, including ABS). Wait! There’s more. The 2018 Tiger 1200 XCx comes equipped with ride-by-wire, heated grips, knuckle guards and LED self-cancelling indicator. 

4. Updated Hardware

An adventure tourer like this one definitely needs the hardware to back its claims. To that effect, it uses a tubular steel trellis frame suspended on 48mm WP upside-down forks up front (190mm travel), and a WP monoshock at the rear (193mm travel), both of which are electronically adjustable. Also, the 2018 Tiger 1200 is equipped with Triumph Semi-Active Suspension (TSAS) which uses an IMU for sensing the motorcycle’s vertical, lateral, and longitudinal acceleration, as well as its pitch, yaw, and roll to adjust damping every 10 milliseconds.

Braking is handled by twin 305mm floating discs with Brembo monobloc 4-piston calipers up front and a a single 282 mm disc with Nissin 2-piston caliper at the rear. To enhance braking, Triumph has equipped the Tiger 1200 XCx with ABS at both the front and the rear which can also be completely switched off when required.

5. Cheaper Than The 2017 Variant

The 2018 Tiger 1200 XCx offers a lot more than the 2017 variant and surprisingly costs lesser than it. It costs Rs 17 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi), which is Rs 1.5 lakh lesser than the previous version. With improved engine and chassis, inclusion of the Arrow exhaust, electronic aids, revised rider ergonomics and cosmetic updates, the 2018 Tiger is a great deal at this price. Moreover, it costs lesser than its prime rivals like the BMW R 1200 GS Adventure (17.1 lakh) and the Ducati Multistrada 1200 Enduro (18.04 lakh) (both prices ex-showroom Delhi).
