International Nelson Mandela Day 2023: History

The roots of International Nelson Mandela Day can be traced back to 1962 when Mandela was arrested as a consequence of his role in the anti-apartheid struggle in South Africa.  He was sentenced to life imprisonment, during which, he became a symbol of freedom and equality.  After spending 27 years behind bars, he was finally released in 1990, and eventually served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999.

Commonly referred to as Mandela Day, this international day was officially established by the United Nations in November 2009. Since its inception, it has been celebrated each year on July 18th, honoring the remarkable achievements of Nelson Mandela and his profound impact on the 20th century, which continues to shape the course of the 21st century.
