Understanding Uterine Fibroids — Here’s How You Can Spot The Signs

Discover the signs, risks, and modern treatments for uterine fibroids — a common yet overlooked health issue among Indian women.

(By Dr. Mousam Dey)

In the whirlwind of managing careers, families, and daily responsibilities, many women tend to put their own health on the back burner. This quiet compromise, often made without a second thought, can lead to overlooked health issues and one of the most common being uterine fibroids.

Despite being non-cancerous, fibroids affect a huge number of Indian women nearly 37% of those aged 20 – 40 and 57% of those between 40 – 59. Yet, unlike conditions such as cervical cancer that receive more awareness, fibroids often go undiagnosed or untreated due to fear of surgery and its implications, including scarring, long recovery times, and fertility concerns.

Understanding Uterine Fibroid Symptoms:

Many women brush off heavy periods, constant pelvic discomfort, or the need to pee frequently as just part of life. But these could be signs of uterine fibroids.

If you’re experiencing heavy menstrual bleeding, longer-than-usual periods, lower belly pain, or a frequent urge to urinate, don’t ignore it. These symptoms are your body’s way of asking for attention. Talking to a doctor early can help you take charge of your health and find better ways to manage or treat fibroids.

Here are a few easy methods to manage fibroids that you might need to know:

  • Live a Healthier, More Mindful Life: Keeping your weight in check is one of the best things you can do. Studies show that being overweight increases the risk of developing fibroids. Try to eat more leafy greens, berries, nuts, and fish, basically foods that help fight inflammation and support overall health.
  • Balance Your Hormones and Manage Stress: Hormone levels play a key role in fibroid growth. Make it a habit to get regular check-ups. Also, don’t underestimate the power of managing stress. Simple things like yoga, meditation, or daily walks can help you feel calmer and may reduce your symptoms.
  • Stay Hydrated and Choose Better Foods: Drinking enough water every day helps your body flush out toxins. At the same time, cutting back on red meat and processed foods can lower your risk. Instead, go for whole foods and plant-based proteins like lentils, beans, and tofu.
