From the sample size of 190 patients, 23 died of covid-19 and 21 of them had Omicron variant, the press release said.
New Delhi: In the last genome sequencing, 95 percent of the samples from Mumbai were found positive for the Omicron variant of the coronavirus that led to the third wave of covid-19 infections in the country.
The information was shared by the city’s Municipal Corporation. According to a press release by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), 180 samples out of a total of 190 from Mumbai were found positive for Omicron. It accounts for 94.74 percent of the samples that were taken during the ninth round of genome sequencing.
From the sample size of 190 patients, 23 died of covid-19 and 21 of them had Omicron variant, the press release said.
The last round of genome sequencing that was carried out in December last year under the jurisdiction of BMC, tested a sample of 280 samples, out of which 248 had tested positive for Omicron.
In this ninth round, 282 samples were collected in total, out of which 190 were from Mumbai.
Out of these 190 samples, 74 patients were in the 61-80 age group, followed by 41 in the 41-60 age group. 36 patients from 21-40 age group, 22 in 81-100, and 17 patients were from 0-18 age group.

Of these hospitalised patients, nine needed oxygen support, and 11 were admitted to the ICU.
21 out of the 23 deaths were patients over 60 years of age with comorbidities. 15 of them had not taken even a single dose of the vaccine. Of these, 22 patients died within seven days of contracting the infection.
In the press release, the BC appealed to people to follow covid-19 appropriate behaviour even after the decline in cases. Mumbai logged 192 new covid-19 cases on Monday with two fatalities.
