6 Common Monsoon Illnesses And Their Prevention Tips You Should Know

Monsoon comes with its share of health challenges. Staying vigilant about hygiene, diet, and surroundings, while taking timely medical advice, can ensure that you enjoy the season in good health.

Monsoon showers bring a much-needed relief from the harsh summer heat but also create concerns over health. This season, an increase in humidity and waterlogging breeds pathogens and mosquitoes that pose an increased risk of infections.

From vector-borne diseases such as malaria and dengue to waterborne and viral infections, monsoon spells an increase in seasonal infections. Awareness of some of the common monsoon diseases and their prevention will go a long way in keeping one healthy through the period.

Prevalent Monsoon Diseases:

Malaria:

Malaria is a disease transmitted by mosquitoes and caused by the Plasmodium parasite via the bite of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes. Its symptoms can include body aches, chills, high fever, fatigue, and headache. If left untreated, it causes serious complications.

Dengue Fever:

Dengue is caused by the dengue virus and transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, which breed in standing water. The symptoms are fever, bad headaches, muscle and joint pain, rashes on the skin, and some forms of internal bleeding. Early diagnosis and hydration are the ways to go back to normal.

Typhoid Fever:

Resulting from Salmonella Typhi bacteria, typhoid is transmitted through contaminated food or water. The signs and symptoms are long-standing high fever, stomach ache, headache, diarrhoea or constipation, and lethargy. Its treatment requires medical care and antibiotics.

Stomach Flu:

This viral infection is of the intestines and occurs through contact with infected food or water. Symptoms may include diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, cramps in the stomach, and fever. Rest and hydration are key to recovery.

Viral Fever:

Frequent during the monsoon, viral fevers are generally associated with symptoms such as sore throat, cough, cold, weakness, and mild to high-grade fever. These get self-limiting with symptomatic treatment, rest, and fluids.

Chikungunya:

Transmitted by infected Aedes mosquitoes, chikungunya is characterised by high fever, severe joint pain, headache, rash, and muscle aches. Painkillers and proper rest ease the condition.

Prevention Measures During Monsoon

Keeping oneself healthy in the rainy season is one very important tip. The rise in humidity and stagnant water may increase the chances of the infections, though monsoon diseases can be prevented if precautions are taken on time.

  • Personal Hygiene: Wash hands often and refrain from touching your face with dirty hands. Keep yourself dry and change wet clothes early to prevent fungal infections.
  • Drink Clean Water: Drink boiled or filtered water to avoid waterborne illnesses. Refrain from street vendor water.
  • Eat Home-Cooked Food: Don't consume street food. Eat fresh, properly cooked food and thoroughly wash fruits and vegetables.
  • Keep Your Surroundings Clean: Remove garbage in a proper manner and drain stagnant water to prevent mosquito breeding.
  • Use Mosquito Protection: Use repellents, mosquito nets, and full-sleeved clothing. Empty containers that contain water regularly.
  • Boost Immunity: Eat vitamin C-rich fruits, leafy green vegetables, and probiotic foods. Sleep properly and drink plenty of water.
  • Guard Against Dampness: Fungal infections are frequent in wet conditions. Keep your body dry and dress in clean clothes.
  • Seek Medical Advice: Receive vaccinations if required and visit your physician if signs of any illness show up.

Monsoons may offer a picturesque restoration and give a respite from the heat, but monsoons do bear health hazards. Monitored hygiene, diet, and surroundings with prompt medical intervention ensure that the whole family remains healthy through the season.
