Bypoll Results: BJP Faces Setback in Bihar, Congress Holds Datia, Gujarat Retained

The results of Assembly by-elections held on July 30 across Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat have delivered mixed outcomes for the BJP while offering gains to opposition parties. The most significant result came from Bihar’s Bankipur Assembly constituency, where Jan Suraaj founder Prashant Kishor secured a landmark victory, ending the BJP’s nearly three-decade dominance in the seat and opening his party’s account in the state legislature. In Madhya Pradesh, the Congress successfully retained the Datia Assembly seat, handing the BJP its second consecutive defeat in the constituency. The result has strengthened the Congress' position in the region and sparked fresh political discussions over the BJP’s electoral strategy in the state. Meanwhile, the BJP managed to retain Gujarat’s Manjalpur Assembly seat, providing some relief for the party after setbacks in Bihar and Madhya Pradesh. The victory helped the BJP maintain its hold in one of its traditional strongholds despite the mixed bypoll verdict across the three states. Following the results, Prashant Kishor described the Bankipur outcome as a message from Bihar’s voters, urging the BJP leadership to prioritize governance, education, employment, and credible leadership in the state. He argued that voters were looking beyond traditional political narratives and seeking better governance. Reacting to the bypoll verdict, BJP state president Nitin Naveen said the party respects the democratic mandate delivered by the electorate. Political observers believe the by-election results could influence party strategies and campaign narratives as major electoral battles approach in the coming years.
