Coronavirus HIGHLIGHTS: India is undergoing a massive surge in the number of Covid-19 cases since the dawn of the new year. New Delhi, Mumbai, and other cities have become the epicenters of Covid-19.
Delhi recorded 28,867 new Covid-19 cases on Thursday, the highest ever single-day rise in infections since the beginning of the pandemic.
According to health department data, 31 Covid-related deaths were registered in Delhi. Delhi's previous biggest daily spike of 28,395 cases was recorded on April 20, 2021, during the peak of the second wave.
Meanwhile, the World Health Organization approved two new Covid-19 treatments on Friday, growing the arsenal of tools along with vaccines to stave off severe illness and death from the virus.
More than 26,19,670 precaution doses of the Covid-19 vaccine have been administered to healthcare workers, frontline workers and those aged 60 and above with comorbidities since January 10, the Union Health Ministry said.
PM Modi held a review meeting on Covid-19 with CMs of all the states.
In the review meeting with chief ministers over the coronavirus situation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the focus must be on local containment while stressing the importance of safeguarding the economy and livelihood of common people while framing Covid-19 strategies.
The Prime Minister stressed that states should be in a position to provide maximum treatment to infected population in home isolation.
The active cases have increased to 11,17,531, the highest in 216 days. The death toll has climbed to 4,85,035, with 380 fresh fatalities, according to Health Ministry data.
7,642 fresh COVID cases, 21 more deaths in Punjab
Chandigarh, Jan 14 (PTI) Punjab's coronavirus tally surged to 6,49,736 on Friday with 7,642 fresh cases, while the death toll climbed to 16,731 as 21 more people succumbed to the viral infection, according to a medical bulletin.
Of the fresh cases, Ludhiana reported 1,808, Mohali 1,215, Jalandhar 695, Patiala 634 and Bathinda 469, the bulletin stated.
Seven deaths were reported from Ludhiana, four from Jalandhar, two each from Hoshiarpur and Patiala and one each from Amritsar, Barnala, Gurdaspur, Moga, Sangrur and Tarn Taran, it said.
The number of active coronavirus cases in Punjab increased to 34,303 from 30,384 on Thursday. The state's positivity rate stands at 21.19 per cent, up from 17.02 per cent the previous day, the bulletin said.
A total of 485 patients are on oxygen support, while 30 critical patients are on ventilator support, it said.
As many as 3,612 more patients recuperated from the viral infection, taking the total number of recoveries to 5,98,702, it added.
Chandigarh reported 1,834 fresh coronavirus cases that pushed its infection tally to 74,475, the bulletin said.
With two more fatalities, the city's death toll reached 1,086, it said.
Chandigarh recorded a positivity rate of 25.21 per cent, according to the bulletin.
The number of active cases in the city stands at 7,257, while 66,132 people have recovered from the infection so far, the bulletin said.
Unvaccinated children in 15-18 age grp won't be allowed to enter schools, when they reopen: Haryana govt
Chandigarh, Jan 14 (PTI) Children in the age group of 15-18 years who are not vaccinated against Covid will not be allowed to enter schools, when they reopen, Haryana Health Minister Anil Vij said on Friday.
Schools in the state are currently shut in view of big surge in coronavirus cases in the past fortnight.
The minister issued the instruction during a meeting with officials to review the current Covid situation in the state.
"During the meeting, the health minister urged all the parents of children between 15 to 18 years of age to get their wards vaccinated at the earliest, as when the schools open, those who have not been vaccinated will not be allowed to enter the school," an official statement said.
Over 15 lakh children in Haryana between 15-18 years of age are eligible to get Covid vaccine and vaccination for this age group started on January 3.
With the state witnessing big surges in Covid cases, Vij said two nodal officers will be appointed for each district, out of which one officer will monitor arrangements at the government hospitals and the other in private ones.
These nodal officers will provide information about the arrangements available in the hospitals to the state government, he said.
