Sona Mohapatra Says That Some Actors Can Barely Speak Hindi And It’s A ‘Shame’

Sona will soon be featured in the documentary ‘Shut Up Sona’, which she defines as a feminist perspective on the music and Bollywood industries.

New Delhi: Sona Mohapatra is one of the rare celebrities who does not hold back while expressing her thoughts and feelings on a variety of issues. Recently, the singer shared her thoughts on the Hindi language controversy with a news portal. She referred to the fact that certain Bollywood stars are not fluent in Hindi and it’s a "shame."

In an interview with India Today, the 46-years old singer said, “I can say one thing, that I have watched RRR and Pushpa and I was literally jumping and dancing and kind of making the ‘foofa’ crowd uncomfortable and I had one reaction. Hats off! The effort, the art direction, the casting was brilliant. It was great to see them embrace their culture. Although we have some incredible stars in Bollywood, I must say that there are actors who can barely speak Hindi and it’s a shame because, as a Hindi film star, one should be fluent in the language. The Indian aesthetics are quite strong in South films.”

Sona’s response came after an ongoing debate on ‘National Language’. South actor, Kiccha Sudeep and Ajay Devgn engaged in an argument over Hindi being the 'national language.' This resulted in a back-and-forth conversation with numerous other actors, who subsequently voiced their opinions on the matter.

Sona will soon be featured in the documentary ‘Shut Up Sona’, which she defines as a feminist perspective on the music and Bollywood industries. Sona's documentary will premiere on ZEE5 on July 1.
