Netflix is thrilled to bring the Academy Award-nominated live-action short film ‘Anuja’ to audiences worldwide, premiering on February 5, 2025 across 190 countries. Directed and produced by Adam J. Graves, alongside producer Suchitra Mattai, this moving tale highlights themes of resilience, love, and opportunity amidst hardship.

A Story of Sisterhood and Sacrifice

The film follows Anuja, a talented nine-year-old girl, and her seventeen-year-old sister, Palak, as they toil in a back-alley garment factory. Their lives take a turn when a compassionate teacher offers Anuja a scholarship to an elite boarding school, presenting the sisters with a difficult choice—one that mirrors the real-life struggles of many young girls around the world.

Excitement from the Film’s Team

Mindy Kaling, one of the film’s producers, expressed her enthusiasm, stating, "It is a dream come true to have ‘Anuja’ on Netflix, where it can reach the vast audience it truly deserves. I’m incredibly grateful to Bela Bajaria and Netflix India for recognizing the beauty of this film."

Director Adam J. Graves added, “Suchitra and I are deeply thankful that ‘Anuja’ has found a home on Netflix. This story of hope was made possible by the dedication of so many talented individuals, and we are thrilled that audiences across the globe can now experience it.”

A Powerful Collaboration

‘Anuja’ has been brought to life with the backing of a stellar production team, including Mindy Kaling, Guneet Monga Kapoor, Krushan Naik, Aaron Kopp, Devananda Graves, Michael Graves, Ksheetij Saini, and Alexandra Blaney. The film also boasts the support of Executive Producers Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Anita Bhatia, along with Co-Executive Producers Archana Jain, Susan MacLaury, and Albie Hecht.

Adding to the film’s authenticity, ‘Anuja’ was produced in partnership with Mira Nair’s Salaam Baalak Trust, a nonprofit dedicated to empowering street and working children. The film’s lead actress, Sajda Pathan, is herself a beneficiary of the organization, delivering a performance that resonates deeply with the film’s core themes.

A Film Already Making Waves

With an Academy Award nomination for Best Live Action Short, ‘Anuja’ has already garnered critical acclaim. Now, with its Netflix release on February 5, 2025, the film is set to leave an even greater impact, sharing its poignant story with a global audience.

Produced in collaboration with Shine Global—the company behind Emmy and Oscar-winning films like War/Dance (2007) and Inocente (2012)—and Krushan Naik Films, ‘Anuja’ promises to be an unforgettable cinematic experience.
